How much are Southwest Rapid Rewards worth?
Rapid Rewards behaves unlike most programmes on this site: Southwest belongs to no global alliance, so there is no partner-award angle. What you get is what Southwest itself will sell you, and that makes the value unusually predictable.

No alliance, no partner awards
Every other airline in this guide except JetBlue and Virgin Atlantic belongs to one of the three global alliances, which is what makes partner bookings possible. Southwest does not.
That removes a whole category of both opportunity and complication. There is no chart-versus-dynamic arbitrage to hunt, no partner award space to search from another programme, and no question about which programme to book through. There is one price, from one airline.
The corollary is that the reference value is a reasonable guide rather than a blend of very different outcomes - there is no long-haul premium cabin pulling the average up.

Because Southwest's pricing tends to track its own fares closely, the case for transferring speculatively is weaker here than almost anywhere: there is no outsized redemption waiting to justify committing the points early. As everywhere, find the seat before you transfer.
How to judge a redemption here
Price the flight in cash, price it in points, and divide. Because there is no partner dimension, that arithmetic is the whole analysis - which is genuinely a relief compared with programmes where the same seat can cost wildly different amounts depending on whose miles you use.
If the result is well below the reference value, pay cash and keep the flexible points. There is no scenario here where waiting unlocks a much better version of the same redemption.
A worked example
Suppose a one-way fare is selling for $189 and the points price is 12,400 points plus $5.60 in fees.
($189.00 cash − $5.60 award fees) ÷ 12,400 points × 100 = 1.48 cents per point
Around the level a Rapid Rewards redemption typically lands. Consistency is the feature here: you are unlikely to be delighted, and equally unlikely to be caught out.
