How much are United MileagePlus miles worth?
MileagePlus sits in the middle of the reference values we hold, and it is one of the more reachable programmes on this site: two of the six bank currencies we cover transfer in at 1:1, which makes a balance here easier to top up than most.

Two ways in, both at 1:1
Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Points both transfer into MileagePlus at 1:1 in our verified data. Chase moves in fixed 1,000-point increments, so the exact number an award needs may not be a valid transfer amount - round up and expect a small remainder to be stranded.
Being reachable from two currencies is a genuine advantage. It also makes speculative transferring more tempting, which is the wrong instinct: find the seat before you transfer.
The cabin split is where the value lives

The headline average is a blend. If your flying is short domestic economy, the relevant figure is at the bottom of that range rather than in the middle, and a balance that looks substantial in dollar terms may be worth considerably less in practice.
A note on how we sourced the expiry policy
The expiry statement below rests on an official United announcement rather than the current programme rules, because the rules page would not load for us. That is a weaker source than we would like: an announcement is evidence of what was said on a date, not of what is true now.
We have flagged it in our own data as needing an upgrade, and we would rather tell you that than present it as settled. If you are about to act on it, check United's own programme rules page.
A worked example
Suppose a transcontinental fare is selling for $620 and the award price is 30,000 miles plus $11.20 in fees.
($620.00 cash − $11.20 award fees) ÷ 30,000 points × 100 = 2.03 cents per point
A strong result for an economy seat, and the kind of redemption worth taking when it appears. The check that matters is whether $620 is what you would genuinely have paid, or whether a cheaper flight would have done.
Against the current reference value of 2.04 cents, that is about 99% of typical — what we label around typical value. Those bands are our own editorial rules, not an industry standard.
How this programme prices awards
We have not verified this Airlines rarely state their award pricing model in writing, and we are not going to record an inference as a sourced fact. Whether United MileagePlus prices awards from a chart or against the cash fare is something you can test yourself: price the same route at several different cash fares and see whether the miles price moves with them. Generally works well
- Redemptions where a high cash fare meets a moderate miles price - transcontinental and long-haul routes especially.
- Topping up from Chase or Bilt at 1:1 once you have found the award.
- Premium cabins, where the cabin range tends to be strongest.
Usually poor value
- Transferring in before the seat is confirmed.
- Cheap short-haul economy, where the result will usually be under a cent per mile.
- Transferring an amount that ignores Chase's 1,000-point increment and strands the remainder.

Which bank points reach MileagePlus?
Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Points, both at 1:1 in our verified data. Amex does not transfer directly - but eligible United award space can sometimes be booked through a Star Alliance partner such as Air Canada Aeroplan, which our path finder explains.
How current is the expiry information?
It rests on an official United announcement rather than the current programme rules, because the rules page would not load for us. We have flagged that internally as a source to upgrade. Check United's own rules page before relying on it.
Why does the increment matter?
Chase transfers move in fixed 1,000-point steps. If an award costs 57,300 miles you cannot transfer exactly that - you move 58,000 and the remaining 700 stay in MileagePlus. The transfer calculator flags it.
Is a MileagePlus balance better than a flexible one?
Generally no. Points still with the bank are not exposed to any single airline's devaluations and can go elsewhere. The advantage of miles already here is access to award space United releases to its own members.
